Camus on the Absurd: The Myth of Sisyphus

In this Animated Video, we review the notion of the "absurd," popularized and developed by Albert Camus, French philosopher, and author awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature. Our host Erik Van Aken will discuss important issues regarding Camus' notion of the absurd: its' origin, the metaphysical and epistemological aspects of the absurd, and Camus' critique of existentialism and thinkers such as Kierkegaard, Jaspers, and Heidegger. Finally, we look deeper into Camus' book, the Myth of Sisyphus, to find out how Camus used an ancient Greek myth as an allegory to his philosophy of the absurd, why he turned Sisyphus into his favorite hero, and lastly, his thoughts on how to live happily in the face of the absurd.
