A smoke bomb is a firework designed to produce a large amount of smoke upon ignition. The smoke produced can be used to create an interesting background, add atmosphere, or send a signal that someone needs help. But I was wondering if you could make one in the lab that works pretty good too. So I mixed up 60 grams of potassium nitrate and 40 grams of sugar and heated them up until they were caramelized and brown. Then I mixed in a teaspoon of baking soda and I transferred the mixture into a taped up cardboard tube. Then I added a fuse and took it outside to light her up. Well, it worked a lot better than I expected. Next time I think I’ll add some color.
