What's the difference between bottle oven and bottle kiln? The terms, bottle oven and bottle kiln, are often used interchangeably but this can get confusing. To most of us they mean the same thing - a complex brick-built, bottle-shaped structure for the firing of pottery or associated materials. Most of us assume them to be the same and to do the same job. Although both ovens and kilns had a curious bottle-shaped chimney and both types were fired with coal, there is an important technical difference between the two.

The recording was made in February 1980 when Alfred Clough (1905-1984), master potter and the fireman in charge of the Last Bottle Oven Firing in the Potteries in 1978, gave a lecture to a joint meeting of The Friends of Stoke-on-Trent City Museum and Art Gallery (now Potteries Museum and Art Gallery) and The Friends of Gladstone Pottery Museum. In his lecture he briefly described the difference between bottle oven and bottle kiln.
