Gut Healing & Autism: Why the Digestive System Is Key for Recovery
Every disease begins in the gut, and this is especially true for children with autism. In this video, I dive deep into the gut-brain connection and why healing the gut is the foundation of improving symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
If your child struggles with bloating, constipation, diarrhea, poor sleep, sluggishness, or low energy, these could all be signs of an imbalanced gut. Many parents overlook gut health, focusing only on behavior or cognitive function—but in reality, the gut and brain communicate constantly through the vagus nerve. When the gut is inflamed, overloaded with toxins, or struggling to digest certain foods, it can severely impact mood, focus, learning, and overall well-being.
Gut-Brain Connection: Why It Matters
The gut and brain are connected by the vagus nerve, which sends signals back and forth.
If the digestive system is inflamed, overloaded, or sluggish, the brain will be affected too.
Neurotransmitters like serotonin (which regulate mood) are largely produced in the gut.
The immune system is highly concentrated in the gut—poor gut health means a weakened immune response.
Symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, and hyperactivity often start in the gut, not the brain.
Common Gut Health Issues in Children with Autism
Bloating after meals
**Chronic constipation or diarrhea
*Food intolerances* (gluten, casein, soy, corn, artificial additives)
**Frequent infections and antibiotic use
**Restless sleep and hyperactivity
*Nutrient malabsorption* (leading to deficiencies in zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins)
A study from the University of Reading found that 91% of children with autism suffer from gastrointestinal issues like constipation, diarrhea, or reflux. This means gut healing should be a priority in any autism recovery plan.
Gluten & Casein: Why They Are Problematic
One of the biggest drivers of gut dysfunction in children with autism is gluten (from wheat) and casein (from dairy). These proteins can act like opioids in the brain, leading to brain fog, hyperactivity, meltdowns, and digestive distress. They also contribute to chronic constipation and diarrhea, which we want to avoid.
Common signs your child may react to gluten & casein:
✔️ Bloating & gas
✔️ Irregular bowel movements
✔️ Hyperactivity & lack of focus
✔️ Poor sleep patterns
✔️ Skin rashes or eczema
✔️ Increased stimming or aggression
If you haven't already, I strongly recommend *removing gluten and casein* from your child's diet for at least *6 weeks* to see improvements. Many parents see better sleep, improved focus, and a *calmer nervous system* within weeks!
One of the easiest ways to track gut health is by looking at stool quality using the Bristol Stool Chart.
Type 1-2 - Constipation (often caused by gluten, dairy, and poor gut motility)
Type 6-7- Loose stools, diarrhea (often linked to food intolerances & inflammation)
Type 4- IDEAL! Soft, smooth, well-formed stools daily = A happy gut & brain 😊
