🎵 "I See Fire" 🎵, written specifically for the end credits of 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' (the second film in The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson).

This arrangement is by Dan Armstrong, based upon the fantastic performance of Geoff Castellucci (worth checking out!), and features our Ukrainian student Mark Tarnavskyi, aged 18, as the soloist, demonstrating his exceptional vocal range.

Please, if you can, listen through headphones to hear the warmth of Mark's superb bass notes. 🎧

Cantabile is an all-male choir led by Mr Dan Armstrong, Head of Music, and Mr Matt Howell, Teacher of Music at Balcarras School. We thoroughly enjoy our before-school rehearsals and working with our students to encourage, guide, and increase their confidence through the development of their changing voices.

When boys' voices begin to 'break', it can feel unpredictable. One moment, they can hit the high note they've always loved, and the next moment, their voice cracks in the middle of a phrase. It might feel embarrassing, and some may even feel like giving up singing altogether.
➡️ However, singing during this time actually helps your voice. It builds flexibility, strengthens your muscles, and helps you learn how to control your sound as it settles into its new range. Yes, there will be cracks. Yes, there will be moments when you sound different from what you expect. But those aren’t failures—they’re signs of progress.
We're extremely proud of our all-male choir, Cantabile, and they really are superb role models for all our younger, aspiring singers at Balcarras.
