Here I come with a 'pleasant` surprise. I heard about the game first released on Asia servers and now it has arrived on Steam. Metal Slug; Awakening. As a long-term fan of the Franchise, I wanted to try it.

I will be uploading silent gameplays following the main storyline. With it, my view on the game

My initial thoughts;

The Positive;

- The entry takes the best elements of the franchise at its peak; to the minimum detail, sounds, OST, and characters are refreshed and remodeled. It is good to see all the elements taken from when the franchise was at its peak,

-At the same time, nostalgia kicks in and it is being exploited to keep you engaged, at least during the first stages of playing.

-It is excellent to see throwbacks to epic battles of the first 3 titles.

The negative;
- Several bugs and elements do not belong to a properly finalized product/service, like saving animations when the character turns or avatars out of place.

- All the gameplay, especially during the missions is guided for you to finish. Visuals provide a feeling that the world is indeed expanded but practically speaking it is not.

- In the long run, especially when you cannot advance in the main campaign due to caps on level, the side quests become repetitive. Also, the main story is relatively easy, you have shields, energy, and other mechanism to survive. This ofc differs from the experience of the arcade where all that you had were three lives (if lucky). At the same time, it obliges you to come back and get recurrent rewards in order to advance faster. One could say that this is business model based, but as a player I also use to go to the Arcades often.

Overall;
Do not expect a similar experience to in the arcade. It starts like so but soon becomes similar to the browser games that had their golden age in 2000, with all the characters looking the same and having to either spend money or a lot of time (events, progression system, and return to the game events) to make sense of the game progression.

There has been a lot of work to deep dive into everything that can be customizable. This level of detail is commendable.

The game is meant to be easier and capped by the pay-per-win like any other F2P; customizable parts of items, skills, etc... all based on a F2P, which can become overwhelming at times. Together with it, users and bots sell in-game currency for real money (I even spotted WhatsApp accounts +852 outside the official game channels).

All in all, it is good and gives the franchise a new direction, but feels rushed at times and definitely requires more solo development and a variety of solo achievements and missions in general.
