It was in the middle of the 17th century that sugar plantations began to pop up across Guyana when it was under Dutch control. It quickly became the economic foundation of the colony, and eventually, under the British, there were an estimated 380 sugar estates across the country. One of them - the one at Enmore – would become an enduring symbol. The struggle in the mid-1900s at Enmore would come to define the struggle against colonial domination and sparked a revolution leading to the country’s independence.
