The Last Stand of General Gyebaek: Baekje's Heroic Battle Against Silla and Tang

For this episode, let’s go back to the year 660 and talk about a national hero of Korea: General Gyebaek (계백장군). He was born in the ancient Korean Kingdom of Baekje (백제). He is famous for fighting and giving up his life for his kingdom. Nothing much is known about his life but I will talk about what is written on him in the Samguk Sagi (삼국사기): The History of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. What we do know bout him for certain is that he fought against the allied forces of Tang China (唐) and the Korean Kingdom of Silla (신라) in the Battle of Hwangsanbeol (황산벌 전투) which took place in the year 660. The King of Baekje at that time was King Uija (의자왕), who would end up being the last king of the Baekje Dynasty.

I will first discuss what led Tang and China to invade Baekje, General Gyebaek’s role in it, and famous speeches he gave to his troops before the war.
I will then talk about strange accounts from these times found in the Samguk Sagi; these accounts can be seen as supernatural and are quite interesting for most people not familiar with Korea.
I will also talk about Hwarang Gwanchang (관창), a young warrior from the Kingdom of Silla which became somewhat popular for his actions during the war.

Finally, I will briefly talk about North Korea’s views of Silla, Baekje and Goguryeo (고구려).
