In these upcoming videos, we’ll follow the installation of a new Alton electric starter unit into Geoff’s 1969 Norton Commando.

As you can imagine, there may be several reasons why someone would choose to install an electric starter onto their bike. In this case, Geoff would simply like to remove the kick starter pedal. It’s getting in the way of his gearshift pedal when he has his feet on the rear-sets. It also makes starting the bike a little awkward and changing gear while riding with the kickstarter pushing his leg out.

Geoff’s Commando started life as a fairly rare 1969 model S, but ended up in boxes until he saved it. As you will see, it’s not reconfigured as an S model but it looks great and runs perfectly.

As you will see in the videos, there are a few subtleties relating to the way that the earlier Commandos are setup, which require a little modification of the Alton primary case.
