After the runaway success of the Series XJ, Jaguar took its time with the replacement; codenamed ‘XJ40’, the next XJ was delayed for development and release multiple times, thanks to red tape, logistics within the company and parent company British Leyland holding back. Sir William Lyons retiring part way through development didn’t help, not to mention the even further delayed XJ81 V12 variant and the 80s-spec digital dashboard scared off many traditional Jag buyers. In the face of the Mercedes S-Class, BMW E32 7-Series and Lexus LS400, the quirky, often unreliable XJ40 might’ve looked like an underdog, but there’s an undeniable charm to its comfort, luxury and driving experience and Phil reckons it’s more like a top cat!
