Ice sculptures are beautiful on their own but even more mesmerizing as they are being made. These elegant art pieces have a very limited lifetime but their value goes beyond a cool display. Today we're visiting Armitage Ice where Mark and Matt show us everything involved in making massive blocks of clear ice and carving them into masterpieces.

How do you carve ice?
The longer the ice tempers, the easier it will be to work with. As a general rule, I wait to cut into the ice until it has tempered for at least 30 minutes. To carve craft ice, you'll need a large serrated knife, an ice pick, a mallet, a large cutting board, a sharp paring knife and a linen.

How do ice sculptures not melt?
The thicker an ice sculpture is the longer it will take to melt all the way through. Sunlight is terrible for an ice sculpture. It penetrates the sculpture warming it not just on the outside but all the way through. So as the outside melts there is less internal temperature load to overcome.

How long do ice sculptures last?
An ice sculpture typically lasts an average of 4-6 hours indoors. Ice sculptures can be displayed outdoors, but will have significantly less lasting time.
