An onsite laboratory has been built to restore at the Giza pyramids to restore an ancient vessel.
The ceremonial boat of Pharaoh Khufu is too fragile to travel long distances.
STORYLINE:
In the shadow of the Khufu pyramid, a laboratory has opened.
Archaeologists are working to restore the second ceremonial boat of Pharaoh Khufu.
It's believed the 4,500-year-old vessel and its sister boat were built to carry the ancient leader into the afterlife.
But many of the pieces are too large or fragile to make any sort of epic journey now - so an onsite lab has been built to minimise the distance the boat is moved.
And it is here where archaeologists are working to conserve the artefact.
"We expect to lift all the wooden parts of Khufu Solar second boat by 2020 and finish all restoration processes," says Eissa Zeidan, director general of restoration and transfer of artefacts to the Grand Egyptian Museum.
"We have already lifted 733 parts out of total 1,264 parts."
The project is funded by The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Higashi Nippon International University.
Japanese archaeologist, Kanan Woshimura, is impressed with the piece she is working on.
"It has a very nice details and it is in a good condition, not really damaged," she says.
The boat is one of two buried next to the Pharaoh Khufu and was discovered in 1954.
Khufu, also known as Cheops, is credited with commissioning the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
