This animation, based on the life of Thomas Baker, was produced by Australian Catholic University Design for Multimedia class with Lecturer Elvis Richardson (LIC Melb) and Jack Grant (Sydney). The class worked collaboratively to plan, develop and create the finished animation as individuals and in production teams.

Original photographic images sourced from the collections of the State Library of Victoria and National Library of Australia database and Trove collection of historical newspapers.

The project team pay respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional owners and custodians of the lands on which these animations were created, and recognise their continuous connection and contributions to Country, community, and culture.


Hundreds of thousands of Australians spent part or all of their childhoods separated from their families for a range of reasons. Despite being stereotyped as dangerous to society, Care Leavers have made extraordinary contributions to the Australian community – personally, politically and culturally.

Through activism and advocacy, many Care Leavers have led some of the most remarkable changes in social policy in Australian history, often having had to overcome significant life challenges to do so. ‘More Than Our Childhoods’ provides a place to collect and communicate these diverse experiences and achievements, in ways that will help inform and educate future generations of Care Leavers and activists.
