United States President Donald Trump has announced sweeping tariffs on key European allies over their opposition to US control of Greenland. Trump said 10 percent tariffs will take effect from February 1 on imports from Denmark, the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands, rising to 25 percent by June 1 if no agreement is reached for the US to acquire the self-governing Danish territory.

European leaders strongly rejected the move. French President Emmanuel Macron warned that intimidation would not influence Europe’s stance, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the tariff threat “completely wrong” for NATO allies. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the dispute would only benefit rivals like China and Russia, deepening divisions across the Atlantic.
