As Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi prepared to visit eight Pacific island nations in the Pacific, US State Department spokesman Ned Price warned leaders of the countries to be wary of “shadowy” agreements with China. Beijing has put forth a package to dramatically expand cooperation in the region, and Wang will travel to the Solomons, Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, as well as East Timor, during his trip from May 26 to June 4. Price said the Pacific island nations should make their own sovereign choices and that China “has a pattern of offering shadowy, vague deals with little transparency or regional consultation.” Wang is also set to hold video meetings with officials from the Federated States of Micronesia, the Cook Islands and Niue, as well as host the second China-Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Fiji during his 10-day trip.
