Street Fighter (ストリートファイター Sutorīto Faitā), popularly shortened to SF, is a popular series of fighting games in which the player controls fighters from different parts of the world, each with their own special moves. The series is owned by the game company Capcom and had its first game released in August 1987. Some series are integrated into SF, such as Final Fight and Slam Masters.

Street Fighter II has become the best-selling title since the golden age of Arcade games. By 1994, the game had been played by over 25 million people in the United States alone, at home and in Arcades. Due to the success, a series of updated versions offering additional features and characters were released. All versions of Street Fighter II have sold more than 200,000 Arcade cases and more than 15 million pieces of software worldwide, and they are estimated to have earned more than 10 billion dollars in total sales, making the game one of the three most profitable games of all time by 2017, and the best-selling fighting game by 2019. The Super Nintendo version of Street Fighter II has sold more than 6.3 million cartridges, making it Capcom's best-selling title for the next few years two decades and its best-selling game on one platform.

Street Fighter II is recognized as one of the best electronic games ever, and in particular the most important and influential fighting game ever created. Its release is seen as a revolutionary moment in its genre, and is credited with popularizing fighting games during the 1990s, prompting other producers to create their own series. It sparked a renaissance within the industry, creating a huge impact on competitive gaming, popular culture as well as music and movies.

Most of the game's music was composed by Yoko Shimomura. Shimomura initially had some reservations about making music for a fighting game, a genre she wasn't very fond of, but she ended up enjoying working on the project, stating that despite Breath of Fire being her favorite game among all. of those he worked on while at Capcom, Street Fighter II was the most memorable. Shinomura recalls: “We discussed the idea of – instead of making a theme song for each character – maybe making country-inspired background music. Indian music. When I suggested that it might be fun to make a kind of world music with a comedic look, there was agreement, and we ended up doing it." It was the only game in the series that Shimomura worked on, subsequently leaving the company to join Squaresoft. Isao Abe, new to Capcom, worked on some of the game's songs (most notably the Sagat theme), eventually becoming the main songwriter for the other Street Fighter II games. The effects and sound programming were overseen by Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, composer of the original game.
