Bachelor of Arts' was based on an original idea by Michael Bentine and written in conjunction with director Harry Booth. Bentine was a founder member of legendary "Goons" but subsequently found roles hard to come by and became predominantly recognized with the long-running children's television show 'Michael Bentine's Potty Time'. His one moderate solo success was the feature-length semi-silent comedy 'The Sandwich Man' (1966). In 'Bachelor of Arts' Bentine attempts to recreate that formula: Miklos Durti (Michael Bentine) is an artist of undisclosed nationality who arrives in England after disembarking the ferry. His first encounter is with a bemused customs officer (David Lodge) who bides Miklos farewell and desires he doesn't return whilst he's on duty. Miklos rides his tricycle into town, and when halted by a traffic jam, begins sketching the elfin policewoman (Una Stubbs). She in turn is so flattered by the attention of the amorous artist that she hitches up her skirt and begins striking sexy poses in the street. Miklos stops beside the river, borrows a fishing rod from a small boy and unintentionally causes trouble when attempting to cast off. But the artist is stopped in his tracks when the young boy's auntie, a leggy blonde barmaid, beckons the boy to join her in a nearby pub - the red-blooded Miklos hotfoots it after them. Inside the pub, Miklos proceeds to drink all the regulars under the table and spend a passionate evening with the barmaid in her seaside caravan. Afterwards, Miklos spends an enjoyable afternoon cavorting in a nudist colony but as he makes his way back to port in a state of undress, two police officers (Johnny Briggs and Bob Todd) stop him to determine whether he is a religious nut, sex maniac or John Lennon...
'Bachelor of Arts' basiert auf einer Idee von Michael Bentine, wobei er das Drehbuch zusammen mit dem Regisseur Harry Booth geschrieben hat. Bentine war Gründungsmitglied der legendären "Goons", fand aber später nur noch schwer Rollen und wurde vor allem durch die lange laufende Kinderfernsehsendung 'Michael Bentine's Potty Time' bekannt. Sein einziger mäßiger Soloerfolg war die abendfüllende, stummfilmähnliche Komödie 'The Sandwich Man' (1966). In 'Bachelor of Arts' versucht Bentine, diese Formel zu wiederholen: Miklos Durti (Michael Bentine) ist ein Künstler unbekannter Nationalität, der in England ankommt, nachdem er die Fähre verlassen hat. Seine erste Begegnung ist mit einem verwirrten Zollbeamten (David Lodge), der sich von Miklos schließlich verabschiedet und wünscht, dass dieser nicht mehr zurückkommt, solange er im Dienst ist. Miklos fährt mit seinem Dreirad in die Stadt, und als er durch einen Stau aufgehalten wird, beginnt er, die elfenhafte Polizistin (Una Stubbs) zu skizzieren. Sie wiederum ist von der Aufmerksamkeit des verliebten Künstlers so geschmeichelt, dass sie ihren Rock hochschiebt und auf der Straße sexy posiert. Miklos hält am Fluss an, leiht sich von einem kleinen Jungen eine Angel aus und verursacht beim Versuch, sie auszuwerfen, ungewollt Ärger. Der Künstler wird jedoch gestoppt, als die Tante des Jungen, eine langbeinige blonde Bardame, ihn zu sich in eine nahe gelegene Kneipe einlädt - der heißblütige Miklos rennt ihr hinterher. In der Kneipe trinkt Miklos alle Stammgäste unter den Tisch und verbringt einen leidenschaftlichen Abend mit der Bardame in ihrem Wohnwagen am Meer. Danach genießt Miklos den Nachmittag in einer FKK-Kolonie, doch als er sich unbekleidet auf den Rückweg zum Hafen macht, halten ihn zwei Polizisten (Johnny Briggs und Bob Todd) an, um herauszufinden, ob er ein religiöser Spinner, ein Sexbesessener oder John Lennon ist...
