In this video, I share the story of a 51-year-old woman who spent two years in a wheelchair after her original knee replacement became infected while she was living in Puerto Rico. The implant was removed and replaced with antibiotic cement that limited motion and weight-bearing. Her surgeon later retired, and no local surgeon was able to perform the complex reconstruction she needed.

When she finally came to my clinic, we ruled out ongoing infection and performed a complex revision knee replacement. She had severe bone loss, ligament deficiency, and could not actively extend her knee. Extensive reconstruction was required, including a hinged revision knee implant and advanced fixation techniques.

Postoperatively, her knee was protected in extension for six weeks while she focused on quadriceps activation. Only after regaining strength did we begin gradual range-of-motion therapy.

At just three months after surgery, her recovery surprised even me.

Revision knee replacement isn’t for everyone, but for the right patient, at the right time, it can be truly life-changing.
