Lil Johnson wrote and first recorded Get 'Em From The Peanut Man (Hot Nuts) on July 16, 1935. It was released on the Champion label with the B-side title, Anybody Want to Buy My Cabbage.

The playful subtleties and lyric style were known as hokum in the vaudeville era, also known as a double entendre. Examples of double-play-on-wording were common-place in American Blues songs during the 1920s and 1930s.

Lil Johnson re-recorded Get 'Em from the Peanut Man (Hot Nuts) on March 4, 1936. It was then released on the OKeh label backed with a new song, Press My Button (Ring My Bell), another song of risqué lyric play.

After the OKeh record was released, the two sides were also issued on the black and gold Vocalion label. As if that storyline wasn't confusing enough; Lil Johnson's second-take of the song was also released on the Vocalion label, this time with an amended title, Get 'Em from the Peanut Man (The New Hot Nuts). That fourth issue, the second for Vocalion, was backed with the song, Sam - The Hot Dog Man.

Get 'Em from the Peanut Man (Hot Nuts) was also recorded and released in 1936 by Georgia White being the one-and-only apparent cover of the song until June 2012's rendition by The Soaked Lamb.

There are little of any details known about Lil Johnson's early life, nor is there much known of her past 1937. In fact, details are so scarce, except for her initial Chicago recording session in 1929 and for the ones previously noted, that only mystery prevails.

I recorded this video of my original 1935 78RPM record being played on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of shellac records, especially that of early blues music and unique artists.
