The book of Romans has the most comprehensive discussion of the doctrine of sin. The term is mentioned more than any other book. Paul concludes both Jew and Gentile are under sin's power. Romans 3:23 states the famous verse: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:10 says, "There is none righteous, no, not one." All are under God's judgement and wrath due to sin.

Paul teaches the universality of sin, quoting Psalm 14 on mankind's sinfulness. Adam's sin infected humanity. Romans 5:19 connects sin to death - all under the law of sin and death need salvation.

Paul opens with humanity's descent into idolatry and sexual sin, resulting in a "reprobate mind." Reprobate means rejected, worthless - revealing how sin affects the mind. The ancient world was known for debauchery and temple prostitution connected to idolatry.

Romans 1:21 states, "God gave them over to the sinful desires of their hearts." God's judgement on Gentiles for their rebellious sin. Paul later judged the Jews for violating the law they had. All men under God's judgement due to sin - Paul's diagnosis.

Romans 5:19 states, "By one man's disobedience many were made sinners." Adam is the representative head of sinners, Christ the head of the righteous. In Adam, sin and death; in Christ, righteousness and life. Jesus is the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45).

Paul contrasts living under law versus grace. The law gave sin its strength, grace frees us from its power. The law brought judgement, while grace brings justification. Sin shall not have dominion under grace. An important statement, as some still act like sin dominates believers. But for those under grace, sin is not the master.

The law gave strength to sin, not deliverance from it. Jesus succeeded where the law failed (Romans 8:3), condemning sin in the flesh through his sacrifice. This brought victory over sin and death for all who accept it. Let's walk in this victory and freedom from sin's power.
