Witnesses who saw the Bondi shooting unfold firsthand have spoken to Guardian Australia about their experiences. Bridget was on the back of her partner's Vespa when she saw an alleged gunman exit the backseat of a car. “I thought he was picking up crutches and I felt sorry for him,” she said. “And he just picks up the biggest gun I've ever seen and instantly opens fire.”

Bridget says there were 'hundreds' of people at Bondi when the incident unfolded. “I just go to my partner Tommy, 'Drive, he's got a gun!',” she says. “All I could think was, I'm going to get shot in the back.”
