Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says it's time for the world to be clear-eyed: the US of today under President Donald Trump is not the one of American leadership they had become used to.

So can New Zealand trust the US enough to join AUKUS Pillar 2? Turnbull says the second pillar is largely about tech, meaning New Zealand won't face too many negative consequences joining it. He adds Australia's submarine deal as part of Pillar 1, however, is a "massive mistake" and an "absolute shocker".

Ahead of the Australian federal elections, Turnbull also casts doubt on Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton, saying voters are turned off by his Trump-like characteristics.
