Many everyday symptoms are actually red flags for nutrient shortages.
In this video we break down 6 hidden signs:
➡️ Easily bruised skin → Vitamin C deficiency
Why: Vitamin C is essential for making and stabilizing collagen (it’s a cofactor for prolyl & lysyl hydroxylase). Collagen strengthens blood vessel walls and connective tissue; when vitamin C is low, capillaries become fragile and tissues tear more easily, so minor bumps make bigger bruises and wounds heal slower.
➡️ Craving ice or dirt (pica) → Iron deficiency
Why: Ice- or dirt-eating (pagophagia/geophagia) is strongly associated with iron-deficiency anemia. The exact mechanism isn’t fully clear, but iron affects brain chemistry (including dopamine pathways) and oral sensory changes; chewing ice may temporarily relieve oral inflammation or fatigue. Pica is a common clinical clue to low ferritin/iron stores.
➡️Strong salt cravings → Possible adrenal / mineral imbalance (eg. low aldosterone, low sodium, volume depletion)
Why: Salt appetite is often the body’s response to low sodium or disrupted mineralocorticoid (aldosterone) signaling from the adrenal glands. Conditions that cause sodium loss (excessive sweating, certain medications, adrenal insufficiency) or low blood volume can drive a desire for salty foods. Note: salt craving is non-specific and can be influenced by habit, pregnancy, or intense exercise.
➡️ Cracked mouth corners (angular cheilosis) → Riboflavin (vitamin B2) deficiency
Why: Riboflavin is needed for cellular energy and maintaining healthy mucosal tissues. Low riboflavin (or overall B vitamin deficiency) impairs epithelial cell turnover at the mouth’s corners, producing painful cracks, inflammation, and sore throat.
➡️ Sound sensitivity / increased noise sensitivity → Magnesium deficiency (possible contributor)
Why: Magnesium helps regulate neuronal excitability and acts as a natural NMDA receptor blocker. Low magnesium can increase neural hyperexcitability, making you more reactive to sensory input (sound sensitivity, headaches, muscle twitching, even tinnitus or migraine tendency). Serum magnesium tests are imperfect, but clinical signs and dietary history matter.
➡️ Feeling overwhelmed, low stress tolerance, anxiety or brain-fog → B-complex deficiency (B1/B2/B3/B6/B9/B12)
Why: B vitamins are cofactors in energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis (serotonin, dopamine, GABA). Shortages can reduce brain energy, impair neurotransmitter balance, and produce fatigue, low mood, irritability, poor concentration and reduced ability to cope with stress. B12/folate deficiency can also cause cognitive symptoms.
⚠️ Important disclaimer: These signs are clues — not definitive diagnoses. Many symptoms are non-specific and can have many causes. Always confirm with appropriate blood tests (CBC, ferritin, vitamin levels, electrolytes, cortisol) and consult a healthcare professional before starting supplements or making major diet changes.
