Chinese AI models have almost always been open source. But for the first time, some of the biggest ones are now going closed.

That shift sends a clear signal. Open source has often been the move for companies trying to catch up, while closed source suggests they believe they are ahead.

Recent testing on OpenRouter shows these models are strong at both analysis and coding, while being far cheaper than Western competitors. Quinn, for example, is 68 times cheaper than Opus.

The combination of performance and cost could make Chinese models a serious force in the global market.
