STORYLINE:
The security build-up for the upcoming Group of Eight (G8) summit continued in and around the Italian city of L'Aquila on Monday, as protesters took to the streets of Rome calling on those attending the meeting to honour promises of aid to sub-Saharan Africa.
Protesters from the World Vision organisation, wearing masks of G8 leaders, staged a mock robbery to highlight pledges made by G8 leaders four years ago.
"They've promised money for overseas aid and there is a real danger that they are going to cut those promises," said Jan Butter.
Italy, along with France, have taken heat for donating only a fraction of 8 (b) billion US dollars in aid they pledged to increase assistance to sub-Saharan Africa by 25 (b) billion US dollars a year by 2010 as part of ambitious plans laid out by the G8 in 2005.
Italy's current spending only covers 3 per cent of the 3.5 (b) billion US dollars it promised and France has delivered only 7 per cent of the additional 5.2 (b) billion US dollars it pledged, according to the London-based anti-poverty group ONE.
The summit opens to African nations on the last day, with food security topping the agenda.
Italy, home to both the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation and World Food Programme, is pushing for a package that could include a move toward strategic grain reserves and calls for investments in new agriculture technologies.
Meanwhile, security preparations were in full swing on Monday in L'Aquila, two days ahead of the summit.
General Giuseppe Vallotto, the chief of interforce G8 military security, said about 3-thousand people were involved in the operation.
Several protests against G8 have been planned across Italy, including a demonstration in L'Aquila on Friday, when the summit ends.
