How to teach a strong Down command, generalizing downs, emergency downs

Here are many steps you can take to teaching your dog a STRONG DOWN command. By strong I mean the dog being able to do it at a distance, when moving, when engaged with something like dog play, and stay in that down position for long periods of time. This is great for emergency downs, duration downs, generalizing downs to different areas, situations and surfaces.
