TALK DESCRIPTION:
In a Higher Education world that increasingly pushes us to consider metrics, the role of active learning has emerged not as a luxury, but as a vital component of effective teaching. Not only has it been shown to raise achievement but also to close achievement gaps for traditionally under-represented student groups. Yet despite its proven value, traditional, passive approaches to education remain deeply entrenched. In this presentation, I will present some ideas about why and of course will invite the audience to engage in a little active learning of their own!

SPEAKER BIO:
I am currently a Professor in Psychology at University of Sussex and a National Teaching Fellow with over thirty years of teaching experience across the educational spectrum. I recently led the Central Foundation Year team at Sussex to win two national awards for outstanding student support during my seven year run as Director of Student Experience and have obtained Senior Fellowship of Advance HE as well as Fellowship of SEDA. I co-founded the Active Learning Network in 2016, a network which has now grown to have over 60 institutional satellites in HE institutions worldwide, an annual CPD offer, Spring festival and conference. I also co-founded the SEDA Transitions Community of Practice and hold positions as co-chair of SEDA Papers Committee and member of the SEDA executive committee. I am Deputy Events Lead for the Association of National Teaching Fellows and co-host the Learning Matters podcast focusing on scholarship.
