Hi everyone and welcome to my new Sarah's Office Snippet for the week. This week's is all about Excel again and this one is regarding freeze panes.

When you receive a spreadsheet from your colleagues how often do you scroll down it and then realise that the heading the missings from the top and where you've got amounts you sometimes think gosh which was in which column, I can't quite remember. Whether you scroll down or whether you scroll across as well occasionally you might have columns at the beginning that would be useful to have to see. Now if people know about this then hopefully they'll do this in advance of sending it to you but occasionally people do forget so I would recommend if you're producing something like this that is quite large then do set up Freeze Panes before you send it out and I'm sure people will thank you for it.

Now the way Freeze Panes works is pretty straightforward actually. If you just want to freeze for instance the top row, in the newer versions of Excel it gives you that option on the View ribbon. If you click on view, you'll see a button here called freeze panes and when you click on it, it now gives you three options. Now, the middle one you'll notice is freeze top row so, in this case, I might decide that I simply want to do that so I just select that by left-clicking and you'll notice the line will come up on your spreadsheet just to denote the part that it's frozen. If I now scroll down you'll notice that the headings are now staying at the top so I can immediately see what's what.

Now occasionally with Freeze Panes you may have something like this which goes across the page. As I mentioned so you might decide that you want freeze columns A and B as well as the top row and this is where people struggle. The first thing I'm going to do is just unfreeze the panes that I've just frozen and then the secret is with Freeze Panes is if you want to do something other than just the top row or the first column, so if for instance, I want to freeze the top row and the left two columns, columns A and B, the secret is that you need your cursor to be clicked on the cell below and to the right of the data that you want freeze. So if I'm in C3 no C2 rather than this is going to freeze columns A and B and it's going to freeze Row 1. If I was on say this and C3 then it would freeze everything above, so the top two rows and these columns here. In this scenario I want to be clicked here and then I go to Freeze Panes button and I click on the top option which is just Freeze Panes and when you click on it the lines will then come up on the screen just showing you what you frozen so you'll see a faint line under the headings and a faint line just after column B. Now if I scroll across to the right it's frozen columns A and B and if I scroll down it's frozen Row 1.

So I do hope you find this one really useful. It's so so handy and, once you mastered it, you can use it all the time.
