Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples is the only museum in Japan that introduces northern ethnic cultures from Greenland to Northern Europe, such as Ainu culture and Okhotsk culture.
About 900 artifacts collected from around the world are exhibited according to various topics, such as subsistence activities, clothing, food and housing.
The items showcase the cultures of Northern peoples.

Who are the Ainu people ?
Ainu means 'human' in the Ainu language.
They are an indigenous people of Japan who lived in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands.
The Ainu are one of the only major ethnic minorities in the Japanese islands, with a distinct and highly unique culture and way of life, own culture, including languate and beliefs.
It is believed that the Ainu ethnic and cultural identity was gradually formed from around the 12th century.
Although it experienced major social changes during the Edo period (1600〜1868) under the rule of the Matsumae clan and the shogunate, and after the Meiji period (1868〜1912) under the control of the Japanese government, it has continued to pass on various cultures and traditions to this day.

グリーンランドから北欧までアイヌ文化を含めた北方民族の文化とオホーツク文化を紹介する日本で唯一の博物館です。
世界各国から収集した約900点の工芸品を、生業、衣食住などのテーマ別に展示し、北方に暮らす人々の文化を紹介しています。

アイヌ民族とは
アイヌ語で「人間」を意味します。
北海道、サハリン、千島列島などに暮らしていた日本の先住民族です。
言語や信仰など独自の文化を持っています。
12世紀ごろから徐々に、アイヌの民族的、文化的なアイデンティティが形成されたと考えられています。
江戸時代には松前藩や幕府により、明治時代以降は日本政府の支配下で大きな社会的変化を経験しましたが、現在まで様々な文化や伝統を伝えています。
