This is a video in which I examine the Sonderweg thesis about German history. Please note that this is a diverse thesis and explaining and responding to all of them is impossible. This video will examine certain aspects of the Sonderweg thesis, but will have left out parts important in certain specific proponents of the thesis, which I am sorry for but is inevitable.

The thesis explores the road to Hitler, which started at the Napoleonic wars, through Bismarck and the Kaiserreich to arrive at it's unavoidable endpoint of Hitler. How did Hitler rise to power to commit his many attrocities? Well it's quite simple. During and after the French revolution German intellectuals and states disassociated themselves with the concept of "liberalism". The French way of reforming was by revolution, because the French were incapable of slow and steady reform. Instead the German states, especially Prussia, took to modernising over liberalising, becoming a highly efficient and militarised autocracy.

Then came Bismarck, who by deciding to exclude Austria from Germany and remaining a conservative monarchy essentially cemented this Prussian ideal into the larger German state. When Wilhelm II then came to power he broke with Bismarck's ideal of peace and unity as a small Germany, and sought expansion. When this was shot down the Weimar Republic was declared.

But the Republic was faulty and more often than not rule was done through emergency decree, not majority rule. Until eventually radicalisation tore the democracy apart and through emergency decree Hitler rose to power.
