For many immigrants, U.S. citizenship is the end goal, because there are certain rights, such as voting, that only citizens may exercise.

There are several ways to become a citizen. You can do it by being a green card holder, marrying a U.S. citizen, or serving in the military. Each of these will take slightly different amounts of time. No matter which path you take, you’ll need to demonstrate “good moral character.” This involves looking at your past behavior, including any criminal convictions.

If you think you qualify, submit a Form N-400. Once this form has been processed, someone from USCIS will contact you about setting up an interview and a civics exam, which will test your knowledge of U.S. history and government.

If you pass the interview and exam, then your last step is a public oath swearing ceremony. If you don’t, you can appeal, or try to retake them.
