Choosing instruments that measure constructs of interest and administering them appropriately is not easy. Some instruments lack reliability and/or have poor or unknown factor structures, just to name two issues. Furthermore, the way that instruments are administered can lead to participants filling them out in ways that are not representative of reality, whether we know it or not. In this presentation, we will review these pitfalls and ways to avoid, diagnose, and treat them, including using validated instruments, checking data for suspicious patterns of responding, and controlling the influence of respondent bias.
