Karnail Singh Paras Ramoowalia (1916-2009) arguably the greatest Kavishar, Punjabi balladeer
of the 20th century after Rajab Ali, captured the hearts of Punjabi masses through the live
performances in Akharas (large gatherings) and Sikh congregations for decades and through gramophone records sold in millions. He also brought the traditional music form into the modern age with secular and rationalistic themes. He was born in his mother`s native village Mehraj District Bhatinda, Punjab. He did not have any formal education. He learnt writing Punjabi while grazing animals around village periphery. He had a very good command on Punjabi language and he mastered Kavishari ( a style of folk music entailing energetic and dynamic cappella). It was originated in the Malwa region of Punjab. A performer or writer of kavishari (Punjabi poetry) is known as “kavishar’. Kavishari is usually performed in Festivals, weddings, diwaans ( Sikh religious functions) and harvest celebrations. His compositions became the subject of research works in Punjabi Univeristy, Patiala. He was bestowed with the title of “Sharomani Kavishar”. Most of his career he was accompanied with two singers reciting his poetry; main was Ranjit Singh Sidhwan and the other was Chand Singh Jandi.
