SB 1.17.1 Key to Develop Good Vaiṣṇava Behavior | Rus-Split | 12.2.92 | Gopal Krishna Goswami

Vaiṣṇava behavior: can be ideal if we understand the spiritual culture. If we understand this spiritual culture, if we understand the significance of the various rules and regulation s that we are given, then we can embark on this path of pure devotional service. So, one may not be a pure devotee in the initial stages, that is to be expected. But if one follows the rules and regulations that one is given, then one comes on the path of pure devotional service, and if one comes on the path of pure devotional service, then eventually he will become a pure devotee.

Artificial Humility: The cause for poor Vaiṣṇava relationships is our inability to follow the process of self-realization that has been given. Because we do not follow the process with full faith, our discrepancies and anarthas get magnified. And when these anarthas get magnified, the result is the discrepancy in Vaiṣṇava behavior — we are rude with each other, we fight with each other, we criticize each other, we distrust each other. Good Vaiṣṇava relationships are not based on artificial humility. I'll give you few examples of artificial humility. Just like when you take an aeroflot flight, when you're getting out of the plane, the air hostess stands at the gate and says, "Da svidaniya [Goodbye], Spasibo [Thank you]," to everyone and walks out. You go to a hotel, they receive you with smiling words and very nice good morning, very nice sweet words of welcome. So these are known as artificial. This is known as artificial humility. And artificial humility does not satisfy anyone. Therefore, you have so many wars going on, misunderstandings going on, all over the planet. So devotee, however, wants to calculate genuine Vaiṣṇava principles, because by following genuine Vaiṣṇava principles, there will be an ideal Vaiṣṇava behavior of devotees which will be pleasing to each other.

Key to develop good Vaiṣṇava behavior: A very important element in Vaiṣṇava behavior is the desire to respect. And the strength to respect comes from faith in the process of bhakti. So to summarize, the process of sādhanā bhakti is the key to developing good Vaiṣṇava behavior. Execution on the spiritual standard is a key to developing attraction to Kṛṣṇa. And as we develop a taste for Kṛṣṇa, we will have the ability to give up our taste for sense of enjoyment.
