Whether cut for time or for the sake of narrative, most re-broadcasts of the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest are missing an interesting footnote to Michael Jordan's winning free throw line dunk: he missed his first attempt.

Following Dominique Wilkins' lowest score of the day (a 45 for a two-handed windmill), Jordan earned a score of 50 on his final dunk, overtaking Wilkins by two cumulative points to take home his second dunk crown. Jordan's free throw line 50 was his second of the day, having earned a 50 for the same dunk in the semi-finals.

Wilkins, whom some considered deserving of the 1988 crown, benefited from his own partial judgeship in 1990 when he earned a semi-controversial dunk contest decision over Kenny Smith.
