China – U.S. competition: GDP of first-level country subdivisions #TOP10Channel
Data: 1) National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS); 2) U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
The United States is the world's largest economy. The country's GDP usually accounts for 1/4 of the world's GDP. Thus the States of the United States also have a very large economic scale. If they were an independent country, the economies of California, Texas, and New York would be in the top 10 of the world's largest economies. China is the second largest and fastest growing economy in the world. The share of the Chinese economy's GDP in the world GDP has increased continuously from 2.4% in 1993 to 16.3% in 2019. The economic scale of the Chinese provinces is therefore also very large. If it were an independent country, the economic size of Guangdong province, the most developed province in China, surpassed Russia, Indonesia and Canada.
TOP 10 Channel compares the size of GDP of U.S. states to Chinese provinces in the period 1993-2020. It can be seen that the rate of economic expansion of the provinces in China was significantly high. Before 2000, there was no Chinese provinces with an economy larger than the average US state. However, from 2000 onwards, Chinese provinces gradually outperformed many states in the US. In addition, the size of the national GDP (billion USD) of the United States and China are also compared to have a better view of the development of these 2 countries.
