How to become a registered nurse (RN): RN degree programs and tips! Registered nurses, also called RNs for short, are the most common type of nurse in the United States. There are nearly 4 million licensed RNs, and nearly 3 million are active in the workforce.

But how do you become a registered nurse (RN)? In general, you'll need to have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and once you obtain that, there are three common paths you can take to become an RN.

You must pass the NCLEX to achieve your RN License ( Gold Standard)

1. Associate degree program. There are various associate degree programs available (ADN, ASN, AAS), all of which can help you become a licensed RN.

2. Diploma/certificate program. There are various diploma programs, typically offered by hospitals, in which you can earn your license to practice as a registered nurse.

3. Bachelors - BSN

4. Masters - MSN

5. Doctorates - DNP
