A Great Mystery Of The Inca: Sacsayhuamán in Peru!

The archeological site of Sacsayhuaman is located on a hill above Cusco. It's also a place of great mysteries. Archaeologists have not yet been able to determine the function of the immense rock formations. Was it a fortress or a spiritual center?

At first it was thought to be a fortress where fighters were trained. But recently it is mainly thought of as a religious building. It would mainly serve to worship the sun god Inti. In 1982, some graves of priests were discovered, further confirming the latter hypothesis. It makes a visit to this place extra special.

The ruins lie 3,500 meters above sea level. You can hike up from Cusco on foot. It's a steep hike. According to archaeologists, Sacsayhuamán is shaped like a puma's head, with the city of Cusco supposed to represent the body.
