We sent Burton Team Rider, Telma Särkipaju, to her first backcountry contest, Research & Development in White Water, British Columbia. Her first time snowboarding in powder, fellow Burton Team Rider Maria Thompson showed her the ropes around what it takes to put it down in the backcountry.

"Research & Development" invited 14 riders to film and compete in an off-resort venue for a chance to win $5,000 and a spot on the ‪@NaturalSelectionTour‬ in 2025. RND is a solution to the gender gap in professional backcountry snowboarding. The first-of-its-kind event offers a space for women to learn and ride in the backcountry while fostering a community that builds the future of the sport.
