This bow is a recreation to the best of my ability of a bow from 1665 collected in the Virginia colony. Though this bow was heat treated for durability and to improve compression resistance.

I've always been fascinated by "The Encyclopedia of Native American Bows Arrows and Quivers". A book by Jim Hamm and Steve Allely, I've read both volumes many times as inspiration and finally had a chance to recreate one of the ancient designs. The design I chose was a Powhatan bow 68 1/2" long, 11/16" wide at the handle, 1 1/2" at the midlimb tapering to 3/4" tips with pin nocks. The bow finished up at 54lb @ 26" of draw. I could've tillered it out further but was hesitant with my lack of experience with the material and what it can tolerate. The board used is American Oak which was a known bow wood of the Powhatans. It dually my first time making a board bow and using Oak as a bow wood. Had a great time with the project and proving the versatility of these ancient designs.

Highly recommend checking out both volumes of "The Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows and Quivers. The first volume concerns Eastern Woodland tribes whilst the second features the tribes of the Southwest and Great Plains.
