Discover the incredible story behind The Beatles’ timeless classic “Yesterday.” In this video, we reveal how Paul McCartney famously dreamed the melody, why he feared he had stolen it, and how a joke lyric about “Scrambled Eggs” became one of the most recorded songs in music history. If you’re a Beatles fan or love learning the hidden stories behind legendary songs, this is a must-watch.
In the spring of 1965, during the height of Beatlemania, Paul McCartney woke up in a small attic room in a house on Wimpole Street in central London with a melody in his head that he could not explain. He was living with his girlfriend, Jane Asher, and her family at the time, and his tiny bedroom contained little more than a single bed, a lamp, and an upright piano at the end of it. Paul sat down at the piano immediately, playing the melody to make sure it did not escape. What startled him was not the simplicity of the tune, but its completeness.
The structure, chord progression, and melodic contour were fully formed. He would later describe it as if the song had been delivered to him whole while he slept. His first instinct was not pride but fear. He was convinced he must have stolen it. For weeks, he carried the tune around in his head and on his guitar, asking anyone he trusted whether they had heard it before. George Martin, the Beatles’ producer, was one of the first he played it to. McCartney remembered asking Martin directly, “Have you ever heard this? I think I’ve nicked it from someone.” Martin shook his head. None of the Beatles recognised it either, nor did family or friends. Only after exhausting every possible check did McCartney allow himself to believe the melody was his own.
But the words did not exist yet. To give the tune structure, he inserted nonsense lyrics that fit the syllables and phrasing. What he came up with was, “Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs.” He carried the song that way for months, even singing it around the house in mock seriousness. The Beatles found the joke amusing, and for a long time, the song was referred to simply as “Scrambled Eggs.”
Yet McCartney knew he had something greater than a kitchen rhyme. The melody carried a melancholy weight that demanded words of loss and regret. It would take several months before those words arrived.
