The day begins with the sun peeking over the lush greens of Thiruvananthapuram, and there I am, sitting with a steaming cup of kadak chai at the beautiful Ananda Lakshmi Ayurveda Retreat. The traditional architecture surrounding me is nothing short of mesmerizing – a peaceful blend of culture and serenity. The calmness of the morning sets the tone for the day, and what a day it turned out to be!
Rupali and I soon embark on an experience that is quintessentially Kerala – the Kerala Massage! Now, for Rupali, it’s her first time diving into such a relaxing experience, and oh, the hospitality! There’s something magical about the people here – their smiles and the warmth in their words truly lift the spirit. Post-massage, we sat down to enjoy a delicious, authentic breakfast of hot uttappam, sambar, and chutney, all while soaking in the heavenly views that surrounded us.
Next up, an insightful interview with Aparna from The New Indian Express. We had a heartwarming conversation, and she even brought up an old favorite – "Kati Patang." With gratitude in our hearts, we bid farewell and set out for our next destination: Kollam.
After a 2.5-hour drive, we arrived at the magnificent The Leela Ashtamudi, A Raviz Hotel, where we were welcomed with a stunning view of the serene Ashtamudi Lake. A traditional dance performance greeted us as we entered, adding a touch of divinity to the moment.
Lunch, though, was the highlight of the day! Amidst the serene waters of Lake Ashtamudi, at the Floating Seafood Speciality Restaurant - Raanthal which means "hurricane lamp," we indulged in a soul-satisfying feast of fresh day catch of Karimeen (pearl spot), fluffy appams, and succulent tiger prawns. The vibrant Seafood Thali was brimming with mouthwatering fish curries, sambar, chutneys, aviyal, and a variety of flavorful vegetarian dishes, all accompanied by the rich Palakkadan Matta rice. We ended the meal on a sweet note with the divine payasam and crispy pappadam — truly, pure joy on a plate.
There’s even a surprise as the chef shares some fascinating food facts, but I won’t give away everything here – you’ll have to watch the episode to discover those gems.
This journey through Kerala has been nothing short of magical, and the adventures are far from over. Join us as we continue to explore and uncover more beauty in God’s Own Country.
