Are we officially homesteaders now that we have backyard chickens and are eating fresh eggs?

This vlog is our first day with our new chickens in our homestead in Nova Scotia. We are first-time chicken owners and are actually still completing our DIY chicken coop build.

Dominic is working on the chicken coop run in this video. He was stapling the chicken wire and hardware cloth to the run to give the chickens somewhere to run outside.


We have never had chickens before but we have 11 egg-laying hens. We got our first batch of fresh eggs and made our first dinner with the eggs. The chickens are pretty cool but I am still a little afraid of them. I have a lot of respect for them though, they are quickly becoming a part of the O’Driscoll family.

Dominic really wanted backyard chickens and followed a free chicken coop blueprint found online to build his first chicken coop. This chicken coop was made fairly quickly and was a beginner homesteader project. We researched DIY Chicken coop ideas online for a while and settled on this type of build.

We are very new to keeping backyard chickens and building chicken coops. We are homesteading in Canada and will need to have our chickens in the coop through a long snowy winter in Nova Scotia. This is why we wanted to get chickens now instead of later. We won’t be able to begin many new projects over the winter and it will be a great time to focus on learning about chickens and how to care for them.
