Virtual Production | From Unreal Previz to Real LED Shoot - Asset Development & Production Workflows

Our 9 minute sci-fi short "New Air" was produced entirely using virtual production. In this video, we compare footage from the film to its previz to show the role that previsualization played in our real-time production workflow which allowed us to produce the entire film in 10 days.

Versatile's Virtual Production System is comprised of: Asset Preparation, Previz, Techviz, and LED filming. The entire process is built on the logic of data inheritance and data iteration, where each step is directly building on the work done in previous steps to allow for maximum efficiency and accuracy.

The previz seen in this video was made on our full optical mocap soundstage with mocap actors, ‪@QualisysMocap‬ mocap cameras and Versatile's virtual camera. Our director obtained the shots he needed to tell the story within the virtual environment prior to principal photography with virtual scouting and blocking. During this process, the digital assets were being upgraded to final versions in tandem with the previz timeline adding to the efficiency of the production timeline. The process of shooting the previz also allowed the entire team to become more familiar with the director's creative vision. By the time the previz was completed, it was possible for everyone working on the project to see what the final film would look like.

The LED shoot then directly utilized data from previz, including lighting, specific shots and any pre-rendered VFX, allowing principal photography to be completed in just 4 days, with no VFX post-production afterwards.
