Cardiovascular disease is becoming known - at least as a word - to the public. Many have heard the term. They just don't know what that means. Inflammation in arterial plaque is very similar to the inflammation seen in inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Chron's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Here's what happens - the immune system sees tissue that should not be there. So it attacks these tissues. In rheumatoid arthritis, it's attacking bone and cartilage. In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the tissue is the thyroid gland. In cardiovascular disease, the tissue is LDL that has been deposited between the intima and media layer of the artery wall.

Most of families of immune cells are involved in these processes, whether the tissue is bone, thyroid, or plaque. These cells are monocytes, mast cells, T cells, foam cells, neutrophils, and other immune cells.

The term cytokines is made up of two roots: cyto -meaning cell, and kines - meaning attractant. The cytokines IL ( Interleukins), TNF, and others are all involved in this process.

Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many preventable heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. While there, he went on the run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has close to 1,000 primary care/prevention clinics. He was also the Chief Medical Officer for MDLIVE, the second largest telemedicine company. More recently, he founded PrevMed, a heart attack, and stroke prevention clinic.

At PrevMed, we focus on heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline. We serve patients who have already experienced an event as well as those who have not developed a diagnosis or event.
