In this episode of my Sicilian renovation journey, I tackle one of the toughest challenges so far—clearing out my abandoned and rodent-infested villa in Sicily. This renovation project has taken me from the UK to Italy, and today’s task was no exception in testing my resolve. As I stepped into the property early in the morning, I was greeted by the sounds of sheep passing by, a stark reminder of how different life is here in this beautiful yet challenging off-grid homestead.

Wearing trousers became essential as I battled swarms of relentless mosquitoes and bugs—just one of the many unexpected challenges of renovating a historic Sicilian villa. This DIY restoration isn’t just about transforming an old house; it’s about embracing the adventure, heat, and all the surprises that come with it. The 38-degree heat made everything even more intense, but I pushed through, determined to clear out the piles of filthy furniture, rubbish, and evidence of a long-term rodent infestation.

It was soon clear that my villa had been taken over by rats, not mice. The moment I found a dead rat in one of the rooms, I knew this was a bigger problem than I initially thought. Rat nests were discovered in shoes, drawers, buckets, and hidden corners throughout the property. With every rustle, I was on edge, ready for something to jump out at me. It’s moments like these that show the reality of restoring a property in Sicily, but I’m committed to bringing this villa back to life, no matter how tough it gets.

Amidst the chaos of clearing out this old house, I took a well-deserved break and treated myself to some incredible Sicilian street food. I enjoyed two mouth-watering arancini balls from a local bakery—one filled with rich beef ragu, and the other with tender chicken, mushroom, and cheese. Washed down with a cold Fanta, it was exactly what I needed to recharge and continue this battle against dust, dirt, and rodents. It’s moments like these that make the renovation journey more rewarding, and remind me why I chose to take on this off-grid restoration project in the first place.
