(29 Jul 2017) Italy experienced one of its driest springs in some 60 years and some parts of the country had seen rainfall totals 80 percent below normal, according to meteorologists.
The economic director of the farmers' lobby Coldiretti said that two-thirds of Italy were affected by drought.
Coldiretti has estimated 2 billion euros (2.3 billion US dollars) worth of damage so far to Italian agriculture.
In Cortona, agronomist Ilaria Salvadori said that sunflower production was reduced by about forty to sixty percent, adding that with olive trees surviving by producing less fruit, local olive oil will be scarce too.
Among those suffering are also farmers growing tomatoes in the southeastern region of Puglia and wine grapes throughout much of Italy - all signature crops for the nation.
Among the hardest-hit regions is Sardinia, which is seeking natural disaster status.
Earlier in the week, Vatican City turned off its fountains, while Rome and its water company are working hard to avoid water rationing.
