Free Eye Clinic Draws Overwhelming Response in Tawang, Highlights Urgent Need for Specialist

TAWANG , August 29, 2025: In response to the growing demand for ophthalmic care in the region, a two-day free eye clinic led by Dr. Lobsang Tsetim commenced today at Khandro Drowa Zangmo District Hospital, Tawang. The initiative, aimed at bridging the gap in eye care services following the retirement of senior specialist Dr. N. Namchoom, witnessed an overwhelming turnout from across the district.

Originally scheduled to examine 70–80 patients, Dr. Tsetim extended his services to 120 individuals in a single day, supported by the nursing staff and health workers of the district hospital. Patients began queuing as early as 5:00 AM, with many travelling from remote areas such as Mago, Thingbu, Jangda, Zemithang, and Lumla to avail the clinic’s services.

The absence of a resident ophthalmologist in Tawang has left a significant void in the district’s healthcare infrastructure. Locals have earnestly appealed to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering to expedite the appointment of a full-time eye specialist to address the pressing needs of the community.

With over a hundred patients already registered for the second day, the clinic stands as a testament to both the urgent demand for specialised care and the spirit of humanitarian service. Patients expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Tsetim for his voluntary efforts and compassionate outreach, bringing much-needed relief to the region.

The clinic will conclude tomorrow, leaving behind not just a clearer vision for many but a renewed call for sustained medical support in Tawang.
