Not many plants can seemingly grow on bare rock, but this is one that does. And not only that. Come the dry season it appears to shrivel up and die, but given a drop of moisture it miraculously "resurrects" and comes back to life. Hence its name the Resurrection Bush ("Mufandichimuka" in Shona, meaning literally "you die and then you come back to life"). This is one of Southern Africa's most extraordinary plants, studied by researchers for its astonishing ability to withstand desiccation and hailed by many for its potent medicinal and anti-ageing properties. In this, the next episode in his ongoing series on African plants with potential as crops for the future, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) explains why this is a plant that could be hugely valuable for agriculture in marginal, dryland areas.
