Originally from Toledo, Ohio, trumpeter Duke Heitger was introduced to classic jazz and swing by his father, who was a member of a local hot jazz group called the Cake Walkin’ Jass Band.Through listening to his dad’s record collection as a child, Heitger became enamored with the music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Roy Eldridge, Bunny Berigan and other founding fathers of jazz. After honing his talent in Ohio, Heitger moved to the city where jazz began, New Orleans, where he has established himself as one of the leading figures in the classic jazz scene. Heitger recorded with the Squirrel Nut Zippers on their 1997 breakthrough album Hot and is in high demand as a touring artist.

“Swing Pan Alley” was composed by legendary big-band leader Duke Ellington along with Cootie Williams, the longtime trumpet soloist in Ellington’s incomparable band. With his lighthearted and limber playing, using the plunger mute for added nuance, Heitger channels the whimsical energy of Williams, one of the greatest soloists in jazz history.
